Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Good for Kids?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is one of the best martial arts for kids. It's exceptionally safe (no striking), it builds genuine self-defense skills, and it develops the kind of discipline, focus, and confidence that carries over into school, sports, and life. Most kids who try BJJ become hooked within a few classes.

Kids at Rival are trained personally by Jared, a black belt under JT Torres.

Why BJJ Is Safer Than Other Martial Arts for Children

Unlike karate, taekwondo, or boxing, BJJ has no striking, kids never punch or kick each other. The whole sport is built around control, leverage, and positioning. That means very low risk of concussions or serious injury, especially compared to soccer, football, and basketball.

At Rival, kids classes are actively supervised. Pairings are matched by size and experience, and coaches stop any roll the moment anything looks off.

The Benefits Parents Notice First

Most parents notice the change in a few weeks: better posture, better eye contact, better focus on homework, and a calm confidence that wasn't there before. Teachers often notice it too.

BJJ builds problem-solving under pressure. A kid who has worked their way out of a tough position on the mat doesn't fall apart when a math problem gets hard.

BJJ and Bullying

BJJ is uniquely effective against bullying because it teaches kids how to control a situation without escalating it. A child who knows they can physically handle themselves rarely needs to prove it, bullies pick up on that confidence and move on.

Just as importantly, BJJ teaches kids that strength is something you build through hard work and respect, not something you take from others.

What a Kids Class Looks Like at Rival

Classes start with movement-based games and warm-ups, then move into age-appropriate technique instruction. Drilling is partner-based and supervised the entire time. Live training is structured and only introduced when a child is ready.

Classes are grouped by age and ability so your child trains with peers at a similar level, not thrown in with kids twice their size.

What Age Should My Kid Start?

We start kids at age 5. At that age the focus is mostly on coordination, listening skills, and basic body movement, they're learning how to move like a martial artist. Real technical skill builds quickly from age 7 onward.

Older kids and teens often progress fastest. It's never too late to start.
